About the decade

It was a very remarkable period in the history of the 20th century from the point of view of political and social events: it is eventually considered as the end of the industrial age and the beginning of the information age, being called by many as the lost decade for Latin America .

What was life like in the 80s?

  • Multicolor: The way of dressing was very different from today: they wore a lot of overalls, shoulder pads, suspenders and colorful ties. The pieces had strong colors, puffed sleeves and fabrics with pleats and drapes. High- waisted pants and gym accessories, such as leg warmers, were also common in everyday life. There was no shortage of colorful sneakers or shoes (even plastic ones).

  • Amazing cartoons: Talk shows and soap operas occupied a large space on Brazilian TV. International series were also broadcast, such as "Alf and The Muppets", and cartoons - "ThunderCats" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", for example. Children's programs, such as "Xou da Xuxa" and "Balão Mágico", were successful.

  • Cinema classics: Many films from the 1980s are still shown on TV channels. "Back to the Future", "E.T". and features from the "Star Wars", "Star Trek" and "Indiana Jones" franchises were some of the main ones. Other important ones are “Flashdance”, “Karate Kid” and “Ghostbusters”. Animations such as "The Dog and the Fox" were also created in that decade.

  • Pop and rock: The 1980s were marked by the growth of rock, heavy metal and hard rock. "Guns N’ Roses", "Bon Jovi" and "Metallica" were among the successful bands. In addition, the pop of "Madonna" and "Michael Jackson" spread throughout the world. In Brazil, "Legião Urbana", "Roupa Nova" and "Titãs" brought together crowds at music festivals.
